A batch of CBD oil has been recalled after food watchdogs discovered it contains THC – the psychoactive component of cannabis.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) put out a notice on 10ml bottles of extra strong Euphoria Full Spectrum Oil, which has been imported from the Netherlands and has a best before date of August 31 2020.
The FSAI has asked distributors to withdraw the product from the market and inform their customers.
Euphoria has been contacted for a comment.
Hemp may be grown in Ireland but under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 all derivatives of cannabis and hemp containing THC are illegal, even if they contain only trace amounts.
In May a Department of Health spokesperson told the Irish Times there are plans to change legislation to legalise the sale of products containing less than 0.3% THC.
Medical cannabis use requires case-by-case approval by the Minister for Health.
In June 2018 Taoiseach Leo Varadkar stated that the decriminalisation of cannabis was “under consideration” following the legalisation of the drug in Canada.
In May a group of 20 doctors warned Ireland is “sleepwalking” into the legalisation of cannabis.
The Cannabis Risk Alliance include the head of the College of Psychiatrists, Dr John Hillery, and former president of the Irish Medical Organisation Dr Ray Walley.
They say society has “taken its eye off the ball” over the harmful effects of the drug, adding they are treating ever-growing numbers of patients suffering a range of side effects from the drug.
