In a bizarre turn of events the Minnesota GOP appears to have accidentally legalised THC edibles as those who were voting did not realise what they were voting for.
The new law allows adults over the age of 21 to purchase food and drink that contains up to 5 milligrams of THC per serving. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol to give its full name is the chemical that produces a high in users.
In the states where THC has been legalised in edibles the standard amount allowed is 10 milligrams thereby meaning that the 5 milligrams Minnesota has allowed is unlikely to produce a high in regular consumers.
Such items could include gummies, chocolate or drinks. However, purchasing marijuana still remains illegal in the state.
The mistake in legislation appears to have occurred due to Republicans, who have a majority in the house, not knowing exactly what they were voting for.
Jim Abler, a Republican, immediately asked for a rollback of the bill but this was quickly squashed. The Democrats have been pushing for further legalisation of cannabis but without a majority it remains difficult to pass.
The new law was introduced to add more regulation to the market and reduce the Delta-8 market that has appeared throughout the US.
Whether Republicans continue to push back against this new law or whether it could be the catalyst for further legalisation remains to be seen. A decision is likely to depend on how Minnesota votes in the upcoming November elections.
